Laura Könönen (born 1980 in Espoo) is a sculptor living and working in Kokemäki, a MFA graduate from Academy of Fine Arts in 2012 . Könönen combines stone with paint or other materials, such as steel, glass or sound, sculpting the scenery after the end of the world.
Fallen sky, frozen waves or a record player etching an empty groove are just some attempts to create memories of this world, before the earth returns to its original state as a lifeless planet made of stone, moving towards the heat death.
The record seems to go on forever as the diamond needle carves the stone making the sound slowly change. A sculpture sculpting itself. What is left are only small fragments of something that once was, superficial signs on the surface about to fall into the depths of the black stone.
